Hurricanes are types of storms called tropical cyclones that form over tropical or subtropical waters. Hurricanes are rated according to intensity of sustained winds on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Hurricanes are not evenly distributed across the Caribbean Islands. This has been done since World War II and it further helps to keep people safe as well as complement the numbers from satellites. The National Hurricane Center says naming hurricanes helps the communication process for identifying and relaying information about these dangerous storms.
