Many actors have trouble separating themselves from famous roles, but Freeman once again proves he can do anything. Sadly, his performance is Cargo‘s only redeeming quality. Set in a post-apocalyptic Outback, Cargo tells the story of an infected man trying to find a family for his infant daughter before he fully transforms. Good premise, I thought.

Despite the solid foundation of good acting and intriguing plot, this movie falls flat. The scenery and sets feel boring instead of desolate, and every twist is one we’ve seen a thousand times before in previous zombie films. Nothing scared me, nothing interested me, and nothing made me think deeply, except about when the movie might end. Each scene feels like a short film with no connection to the rest of the movie except Freeman, which makes sense considering this started as a short film. This lack of originality, depth, and beauty is too much to overcome for a film that offers little else.

Freeman does honorably well with what little he’s given, but if that’s why you’re giving this film a chance you’d be better off rewatching Sherlock or The Hobbit. If you’re looking for a new and original take on the zombie genre, you won’t find that here either. In fact, you won’t find much of anything here. Not recommended.
